چکیده

Introduction Inflammatory airway disease (IAD) affects 25% to 30% of horses in training. These animals also frequently have upper airway inflammation that may predispose them to dorsal displacement of the soft palate (DDSP). The etiology of this airway inflammation remains obscure, but exposure to organic dusts may play a major role. Organic dusts originate from hay and bedding, and stabled horses can be exposed to dust levels capable of inducing airway inflammation. Using a group of young Arabian horses kept at pasture and in a stable, we asked the following questions. 1) Is stabling associated with inflammation of the upper and lower airways? 2) Do upper and lower airway inflammation occur concurrently? 3) Is a clinical mucus score correlated with the severity of neutrophilic inflammation in the lower airway? 4) Is inflammation of the upper airway associated with dorsal displacement of the soft palate?

Epidemiology of Airway Inflammation and Mucus in Horses by S.J. Holcombe; P2662.1205

Etiology Young horses commonly develop upper airway inflammation. The location of the nasopharynx at the entrance of the airway exposes it to multiple types of allergens, irritant particles, and viral or bacterial agents. The local lymphoid tissue responds to these stimuli by secreting mucus to entrap inhaled particles and by producing local immunoglobulins. As young horses start their performa...

Sternothyroideus Myotomy for the Treatment of Dorsal Displacement of the Soft Palate

The medical records of 41 racing Standardbreds, diagnosed as having dorsal displacement of the soft palate (DDSP), that underwent sternothyroideus myotomy and soft palate resection were reviewed. All horses had endoscopy of their upper respiratory tract, but not necessarily by Dr. Llewellyn.a The history had to confirm the diagnosis of DDSP. Surgery in each patient was performed by Dr. Llewelly...

Palatal dysfunction in horses: where next?

PALATAL dysfunction, the term which describes both intermittent dorsal displacement of the soft palate and palatal instability, is one of the most commonly identified causes of upper airway obstruction in horses (Barakzai and Hawkes 2010). The reported prevalence of palatal dysfunction ranges from 10 to 20 per cent in young racehorses (Pollock and others 2009, Ducharme 2012). Dynamic endoscopic...

Endoscopic appearance of the glossoepiglottic fold of normal horses

The objective was to characterize the endoscopic appearance of the glossoepiglottic fold (GEF) in normal horses. Six clinically normal adult Quarter Horses between 5 and 7 years of age were used and ranged from 480 to 520 kg body weight. Prior to oropharyngeal endoscopic examination, all horses had demonstrated normal function of the upper respiratory tract during high-speed treadmill examinati...

Elevated amount of Toll-like receptor 4 mRNA in bronchial epithelial cells is associated with airway inflammation in horses with recurrent airway obstruction.

Recurrent airway obstruction (RAO) is characterized by neutrophilic airway inflammation and obstruction, and stabling of susceptible horses triggers acute disease exacerbations. Stable dust is rich in endotoxin, which is recognized by Toll-like receptor (TLR) 4. In human bronchial epithelium, TLR4 stimulation leads to elevation of interleukin (IL)-8 mRNA expression. The zinc finger protein A20 ...
